‘Hitch’ Comedy Series In Works At Fox

Fox has put in development Hitch, a half-hour series inspired by Will Smith’s hit 2005 feature romantic comedy. The single-camera project hails from Will Smith and James Lassiter’s Overbrook Entertainment, which produced the movie with Sony’s Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures TV.

Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont (Made Of Honor) will write the series adaptation, a workplace comedy that explores dating and sexual politics. They will executive produce with Overbrook’s Smith, Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett.

The movie, which starred Smith as a date doctor and featured a standout performance by Kevin James, was a blockbuster, grossing almost $370 million. Overbrook and Sony TV previously took a stab at adapting Hitch to series in 2007 and 2010 with different writers. The half-hour and hourlong projects were set up at CBS and Fox, respectively.

This is Kaplan and Elfont’s second sale this season. The duo, repped by CAA and Management 360, also are writing/executive producing Tuned, a single-camera musical comedy at NBC starring Zachary Levi and produced by Eva Longoria.

Hitch joins a slew of movie titles that are getting series treatment this season, including Rush Hour, Big, Monster-In-Law, Marley & Me, Minority Report, Real Genius, Problem Child, Bachelor Party, In Good Company and The Illusionist.
