Historic 'Bachelor in Paradise' finale as the first same-sex couple gets engaged
Demi Burnett and Kristian Haggerty are engaged!
It was a historic night for Bachelor in Paradise Tuesday night, when Burnett and Haggerty took their relationship to the next level, becoming the first same-sex couple to get engaged in Bachelor history.
It's been a long emotional journey for Burnett, who came out as a "queer queen," two weeks before the Paradise season premiere.
Spoiler alert: I’m a queer queen 👸🏼💕🌈 #BachelorInParadise

"I came here to find myself, but I found myself in you. I love you so much, and I'm so in love with you, and I didn't even think it was possible to feel this way about someone," Burnett told Haggerty, before getting down on one knee to propose.
"You have to get one too," Haggerty told Burnett, who responded, "We're working on it."
“Working on it” the Bachelor producers were, because during the reunion Tuesday night, Haggerty had a little help from Chris Harrison to pull off a surprise proposal in return.
"Demi, when I met you, I was instantly captivated by you. I love your laugh," Haggerty told Burnett. "I'm so grateful that you went to Paradise and it gave us the opportunity to grow our love for each other. I know that last day in Paradise, that was the best day of my life, and I wouldn't want to do this life with anyone else but you."

Burnett, who has been a Bachelor fan favorite ever since Colton Underwood's season, received a lot of support when she came out during the Paradise season premiere. Since then, Burnett said coming out has been "liberating" because there's "no more hiding" a part of her.
Fans could not be happier for her:

When Harrison asked how the response has been, Burnett answered, "So much positivity. So many beautiful messages we both received. The hate that we get is drowned out by all of the love. I always dreamed of a day where I'd be able to, like, celebrate who I am, and celebrate love no matter which way it comes. So I feel like we're celebrating now."
The season finale of Bachelor in Paradise aired Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
