What we know about Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo and the 'Drivers License' drama

Sabrina Carpenter dropped a new music video, and fans are speculating its not-so-subtle similarities to Olivia Rodrigo's "Drivers License."

On Monday, the former "Girl Meets World" actress released the music video for her new single "Skin," which features Carpenter sitting on top of a vintage Mercedes car similar to that in Rodrigo's "Drivers License" music video.

That's not the only parallel. The lyrics of Carpenter's "Skin" and Rodrigo's "Drivers License" seem more than coincidental, as fans zeroed in on lyrics from "Skin" such as "You been telling your side / So I'll be telling mine" and "Maybe 'blonde' was the only rhyme," surmising Carpenter was replying to Rodrigo's song. They quickly shot "Sabrina Carpenter" into Twitter's top trends, posting memes and sharing opinions on the song's meaning when the lyric video was released on Jan. 21.

Olivia Rodrigo breaks records with emotional 'Drivers License' song

On Jan. 8, Rodrigo made her solo debut with single "Driver's License." The pop ballad about a lost love went viral on social media, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and broke Spotify's record for most streams of a song in a single week. It even got a stamp of approval from Taylor Swift, who responded to the 17-year-old singer's success by posting "that's my baby and i'm so proud."

Rodrigo's heartbreak anthem tells the story of a heartbroken teenager watching her ex move on, with lyrics such as: "And you're probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She's so much older than me / She's everything I'm insecure about."

The details behind 'Drivers License,' Carpenter's response

Fans were quick to hypothesize who Rodrigo's lyrics were about, many assuming Rodrigo was singing about a failed relationship with her "HSM" co-star, Joshua Bassett, 20, and his new rumored love interest, Carpenter (Netflix's "Work It", Disney's "Girl Meets World"). Why? Because Carpenter is blonde and four years older than Rodrigo.

So far, none of the young Hollywood stars has commented on the rumors or used names when explaining their songs.

Rodrigo told Zane Lowe on Apple Music she "wrote the bulk of the song literally crying in my living room" and "the pain is definitely real in that song."

Then, two weeks after Rodrigo's "Drivers License" debuted, Carpenter, 21, dropped "Skin", a sensual and bold bop about someone trying to get "under my skin."

Carpenter's song doesn't beat around the bush. Telling her unnamed antagonist "You can try / To get under my, under my, under my skin / While hе's on mine / Yeah, all on my, all on my, all on my skin / I wish you knew that еven you / Can't get under my skin if I don't let you in."

Bassett, who dropped his own single "Lie Lie Lie" on Jan. 15 (in between Rodrigo and Carpenter's songs), congratulated Carpenter on his Instagram story on Jan. 22, writing "been stuck in my head since I heard it."
