HBO Orders ‘Ballers’ to Series from Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg

HBO has ordered Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg’s halfhour project “Ballers” to series.
Series centers on a group of former and current football players and will star Johnson, marking his first major foray into TV series acting. Johnson will play a retired athlete, while other characters in “Ballers” include a highly spiritual pro athlete, financial advisor, sports agent, ESPN sideline reporter and ex-wife of a pro football player, among others.
Steve Levinson — Wahlberg’s manager — penned the pilot for “Ballers” and exec produces alongside Johnson, Wahlberg, Evan Reilly, Dany Garcia and Peter Berg. Berg also helmed the “Ballers” pilot. Hiram Garcia is co-exec producing.
“Ballers” will be produced by HBO with Closest to the Hole Prods., Leverage Entertainment and White Buffalo Entertainment.
