Hannah Einbinder on her third Golden Globe nomination for ‘Hacks’: ‘It does feel better every time’
Whether or not the third time is the charm, the third time is certainly more meaningful for Hannah Einbinder, who has now been nominated at the Golden Globes for all three seasons of “Hacks” so far.
“It does feel better every time,” she tells Gold Derby after Monday’s nominations announcement. “I have an athletic background, like I was a cheerleader growing up and that, I think, instilled in me a sense of perfectionism and also a commitment to always evolve and kind of like continuing to deliver. And especially for the people that I want to deliver for, which are [creators and showrunners] Paul [W. Downs], Jen [Statsky] and Lucia [Aniello], who feel kind of like my coaches in this analogy. So when I get awards nominations and when I have been nominated for awards, I think the main feeling is like wanting to deliver that to the people who changed my life and gave me this opportunity, which is them.”

Einbinder is nominated for Best TV Supporting Actress. Fun fact: This is the third different category she’s been nominated in at the Globes. For Season 1, she was shortlisted in Best TV Comedy/Musical Actress alongside Jean Smart, and for Season 2, she was nominated in Best Comedy/Drama TV Supporting Actress in the one year the Globes split the catch-all TV supporting categories into comedy/drama and limited/TV movie. Fresh off its Emmy upset for Best Comedy Series, “Hacks” received two other nominations this year, for Smart in lead and for Best Comedy/Musical Series. Both Smart and the series have prevailed at the Globes before, but it was in 2022 when the ceremony was not broadcasted.
“It’s never lost on any of us how special the experience of making this show is, especially in a landscape of the business right now where it’s very rare for a show to go as long as ours is,” Einbinder says. “So we’re all just so, so deeply, deeply aware of that and grateful.”

Season 3 of “Hacks” was arguably its best yet and Einbinder’s performance was equally acclaimed as Ava confronted Deborah (Smart) in the finale and made a jaw-dropping power play. The actress feels “really, really proud” of her Season 3 work.
“I feel like a student when I go to set. I’m always trying to learn from Jean and all the other incredible actors that I get to work with. And Paul, Jen, and Lucia have really shaped me as a performer. And I feel like every day is an opportunity to continue to learn and get better. As the show has gone on, I do feel like just more comfortable all around. So, yeah, I feel like really, really proud,” she says. “I think obviously the more dramatic work that I was able to do in Season 3 was like, I didn’t even know that I have that in me, to be honest. So I was like, damn, OK!”
Season 4 is currently in production. You can expect some “really incredible, sort of genre-defying stuff in the roast space” and a “beautiful” set for Deborah’s new talk show. Before that wraps up, Einbinder will, of course, attend the Globes. And she already knows what she’s wearing. “I’m gonna wear custom Louis Vuitton. I’m really excited. The dress is stunning and I can’t wait to see all the gowns — beautiful gowns, great gowns, beautiful gowns, of course. All the beautiful girls and the beautiful gowns. That is such a special part of it, like the performance in that sense. The fashions are very exciting.”
She’s also stoked to reunite with her friends, many of whom are fellow nominees. “I love ‘Shōgun’ so much. Anna Sawai, who is so wonderful. I was really excited to see Ramy Youssef’s special nominated. I don’t know that I saw the full list. I just kind of saw like my friends, but that’s what you look for. So just happy for all of the people – Ayo [Edebiri] — friends of mine who are being honored as they deserve to be.”
