“I wrote an un-produced ‘Star Wars’ movie that Guillermo del Toro was going to direct. That was about four years ago,” Goyer said in response.
Guillermo del Toro confirmed Thursday on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he was set to direct a script by Goyer (he’s written several blockbuster superhero films including Batman Begins, the Blade trilogy, and Man of Steel).
Del Toro shared Goyer’s interview on X and teased: “True. Can’t say much. Maybe two letters ‘J’ and ‘BB’ is that three letters?” He later added, “BTW This is MANY, MANY moons ago… about 6 years or so…”
During the podcast’s episode, the screenwriter explained why the film never came to fruition: “There was a lot of behind the scenes stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time. It’s a cool script… you have to ask him about it. There is a lot of cool art work from it that was produced.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Goyer also revealed that he wrote a scriptment for an “origins of the Jedi movie,” set 25,000 years before the original Star Wars film. While it has gone un-produced to date, he said “dabbling in Star Wars would have been fun.”
Del Toro has previously been linked to the Star Wars franchise. The Oscar-winning filmmaker told IndieWire in 2013 that his agent took a phone call gauging interest in directing Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. “It was very flattering,” he said. “It was just a phone call, it didn’t go past that, it was very nice to be asked, but believe it or not, I’m busy enough.”
