Groundhog Day musical sets Broadway opening
If it feels like you’ve heard this news before, you have — sort of.
The stage musical adaptation of Groundhog Day is officially headed to Broadway, two years after its first announcement of an impending arrival on the Great White Way.
The show, which just enjoyed an acclaimed premiere at London’s Old Vic Theatre, will open at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre on April 17, 2017, following a preview period beginning in March.
Matilda duo Matthew Warchus and Tim Minchin reunite for Groundhog Day, which will feature direction by Warchus and music and lyrics by Minchin. Choreographer Peter Darling and set/costume designer Rob Howell, also of Matilda, will reprise their creative roles.
Groundhog Day is based on the hit 1993 film starring Bill Murray, co-written by Danny Rubin, who pens the stage book. The story follows a disgruntled weatherman who experiences an endless time loop during the annual Groundhog Day ceremony in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
Broadway casting will be announced at a later date, although Rocky alum Andy Karl played the title role in the London premiere.
