Global Showbiz Briefs: BBC’s Hugh Bonneville Starrer ‘W1A’ Back For Season 2; Denmark’s TDC Group Paying $2.15B For Norwegian Cabler

The BBC said Monday that it has ordered a second season of the BBC Two comedy W1A, starring Downton Abbey‘s Hugh Bonneville as Ian Fletcher, the Beeb’s Head of Values and chair of its Way Ahead Task Force. The order is for one hourlong episode and three half-hours. The series, which features cameras following Fletcher documentary-style, is written and directed by John Morton for BBC In-House Comedy. Jessica Hynes also stars in W1A, whose title refers to the postcode of the pubcaster’s London headquarters. The ensemble cast also includes Sarah Parish, Jason Watkins, Monica Dolan, David Westhead and Nina Sosanya. “I am very happy to have the cameras back,” the fictional Fletcher “said” in a release. “Being Head of Values is all about resetting the dial for the BBC and perhaps about shining a new light on that dial, or at least shining the old light but with a new bulb, so none of us can be in any doubt where the dial is or can have any excuse for not being able to read what it says.”

Denmark’s TDC Group is spending $2.15 billion to acquire Get AS, Norway’s leading provider of premium TV and broadband. The deal with GS Capital Partners and Quadrangle Capital Partners will create Scandinavia’s largest cable TV company in terms of revenue. TDC said Get serves more than 500,000 households and is the fastest-growing and most profitable provider on the Norwegian market. The acquisition gives TDC a total of 1.7 million connected cable households, up from the current 1.2 million with its YouSee brand. The company said its cable unit will total nearly 30% of TDC Group’s revenue. “The acquisition … marks an evolution of TDC Group into a leading Scandinavian provider of TV, home entertainment and high-speed broadband on the cable platform,” TDG Group President and CEO Carsten Dilling said. Gunnar Evensen, who has been Get’s CEO since 2000, will continue in his position once the transaction closes.
