Fred Savage insists he was forced to appear in 'Once Upon a Deadpool,' reflects on 'The Princess Bride'
In typical Wade Wilsonian fashion, Ryan Reynolds joked (admitted?) on Twitter that Once Upon a Deadpool — the upcoming rerelease of Deadpool 2 recut as a PG-13 movie — is a “cash grab.”
There’s some truth to that, but the movie, at least for Deadpool fans, is legitimately worth seeing for the Fred Savage cameos alone.
The former Wonder Years child star turned director reprises his role as the grandson, the Chicago kid Peter Falk regales with tales of pirates, princesses and poison in the 1987 classic The Princess Bride. This time, Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool (Reynolds), has adult-napped Savage to read him a version of the raunchy and violent summer sequel hit “filtered through the prism of childlike innocence.”
“That was somewhat surreal being on that set,” Savage told Yahoo Entertainment about the shoot, in which production designers recreated his bedroom from The Princess Bride (watch above). “I remember Ryan was like, ‘This is so weird being on this set. I’m like, ‘This is weird for you?! This is very strange!’ Even just sitting there looking at him, from that vantage point with that set behind him, it was very surreal.”
Savage, now a 42-year-old father of three, has shown The Princess Bride (among other movies he made when he was young) to his children.
“The kids have seen it. It’s weird. And it’s weird for me because my kids now are the age I was when I was working. I think it’s weirder for me, to be honest. Honestly they like watching their stuff. I think they watch their dad’s stuff like, ‘OK, got it, dad.'”
When Deadpool 2 was released in theaters, the filmmakers told us about the very specific demands Brad Pitt had made of Ryan Reynolds in order to cameo in the film.
When asked if he made any similar demands, Savage slipped right back into character.
“My demands were just to let me go,” he said, “so I could rejoin my family.”
Once Upon a Deadpool hits theaters Dec. 12. Watch the trailer:
