Female Director Being Considered for Next 'James Bond' Film
There has been so much speculation about who will be playing the next James Bond that we’ve neglected the fact that someone needs to direct it. In a report from Radio Times in the U.K., director Susanne Bier has been shortlisted as a possible replacement for Sam Mendes, who announced he is stepping away from the James Bond franchise. If Bier was selected, she would be the first woman ever to helm a James Bond film, a huge shake-up in the male-centric Bond world.
Bier has quietly amassed an impressive directing resume. She’s been nominated twice for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards, and won the honor in 2011 for In a Better World. She also directed 2007’s Things We Lost in the Fire featuring Oscar winners Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro. And Bier has already given direction to one former Bond in the form of Pierce Brosnan for the film Love Is All You Need.
But what makes the rumors more intriguing is one of the possible implications. Bier’s most recent directing gig was on the acclaimed mini-series The Night Manager starring Tom Hiddleston. Hiddleston has been tied to Bond rumors in the past month, and his role in the espionage drama only furthered the speculation. Considered by some to be a “virtual audition” for the role of 007, a reunion of the two would make sense considering their chemistry.
So, is it time for a female touch in the James Bond universe?
