OA (Zeeko Zaki) isn’t exactly one to skirt the rules, at least not as obviously as he does in FBI Season 7, Episode 3 “Détente.” And yet, his reunion with former army buddy Clay seems to be leading OA towards a dangerous path, even if he thinks he’s got it under control for now.

As the team scrambles to control a gang war, it’s hard to blame OA for thinking the end justifies the means. Clay is not just a former army buddy, so someone OA knows and trusts, but Clay is also someone who can give OA the crucial information he needs. And if that information stops a bombing and saves people, so be it. But as always, there is a voice of reason. In OA’s case, that voice usually sounds like Maggie Bell (Missy Peregrym). “I just don’t want to see you backed into a corner you can’t get out of,” she warns her partner as he confides in her how he got his information.
Shows that center police and federal agents always play fast and loose with rules. From Hank Voight on Chicago P.D. going as far as to kill people if he feels justice hasn’t been served, to the casual police brutality that is sometimes seen in the FBI franchise, it’s not actually out of the norm to have OA acting like he doesn’t need to go through proper channels. Or at least, it’s not out of the norm for the show. It’s very out of the norm for OA, which sets up a very interesting journey ahead for the character.

By the end of FBI Season 7, Episode 3 “Détente,” there’s a sense that this might be nothing. OA listens to Maggie and discloses to Isobel (Alana de la Garza) how he got the information. She, in turn, agrees to turn a blind eye to what happened, as long as OA makes sure Clay is an official CI from now on. That’s what Maggie had suggested in the first place, too.
That OA listens is a testament not just to how much weight he places on Maggie’s advice, but the fact that he understands that continuing to get information from Clay without doing it by the book is a slippery slope. But at the end of the episode, as OA talks to Clay not just about the information Clay has already provided, but what information he could provide in the future, there’s a sense that this storyline isn’t over. And that whatever’s coming will end up bringing problems for OA.
After all, one of the most by-the-book characters on FBI has already proven Clay is a weakness. It’s hard to know if that’s just about Clay, or if there’s something deeper the show means to get into about OA’s time in the army. Either way, Maggie Bell summed it up best when she told OA, “This isn’t like you.” And that doesn’t really bode well for what could come next for the character, particularly with Clay sticking around.
FBI airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and streams on Paramount+.
