Fans react to 'Barbie,' other Oscar snubs: 'Tell me you didn’t understand the meaning'
Oscar 2024 nominations released Tuesday morning. And while some Hollywood A-listers had reason to pop champagne, many fans took to social media to declare "robbery" for those snubbed in the lineup.
The much-anticipated announcement brought history-making news, as this is the first year the best picture category consists of three female-directed movies: Greta Gerwig's "Barbie," Justine Triet's "Anatomy of a Fall" and Celine Song's "Past Lives."
Best actress nominee Lily Gladstone also made history, becoming the first Native American to be recognized in the category for her performance in "Killers of the Flower Moon."
Despite the milestones, much of the post-nominations chatter revolves around the record-breaking blockbuster "Barbie," which was left out of several categories. Margot Robbie and Gerwig went unrecognized in the best actress and best director categories, respectively.
In a counterintuitive move to the female-led marvel that was "Barbie," Ryan Gosling snagged a nomination for best supporting actor for his performance as Ken, Barbie's decidedly inconsequential counterpart.
Though the film about Mattel's iconic plastic doll fell short on the nominations list, the movie's unprecedented number of fans were quick to stand up for it on social media.
Several users also drew attention to films completely omitted from Oscar honors, such as "Ironclaw," which featured a leading performance by Zac Efron, and "Priscilla" starring Cailee Spaeny. Other viewers, though, celebrated the stars they love.
Here are our favorite reactions to this year's Oscar nominations.

So the whole point of the barbie movie was to empower women and show that we are strong and capable in a very male dominated world, yet the leading actress and director wasn’t nominated for an Oscar????
