Everything You Need to Know About the New 'Twisters' Movie
It's time to try and remember the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning, because this summer is about to be infested with twisters. At least on the big screen, that is. Nearly 30 years after the summer blockbuster Twister hit theaters, the franchise is finally getting a second film. The original 1996 movie saw Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton chasing storms in Oklahoma. Now a whole new generation will get to enjoy the thrill of chasing after the deadly wind cyclones.
During the 2024 Super Bowl, Twisters dropped its first trailer, but the project has been in the works for years. Now, the sequel has finally hit theaters and brought in a whopping $10.7 million on just Thursday night alone. The movie has been certified "fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, has a 93% audience score and received an A rating from Parade's very own film critic.

What is Twisters about?
Twisters revolves around a group of young storm chasers tracking down tornados. While Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos are cast as scientists, Glen Powell is a storm chaser who follows tornados for the thrill. It's set during a "once in a generation" tornado spree in Oklahoma with Edgar-Jones' character working to find a way to stop tornados.
Is Twisters a sequel to Twister?
Yes, Twisters is technically a sequel to Twister, but it's also a standalone film on its own and doesn't focus on any of the characters from the original Twister.
In an interview with Variety, Edgar-Jones said, "It feels like a real next chapter, whilst also having so much love for the original. We have Dorothy [the weather sensor device from the first film]. We have moments and costumes that are mirrored from the original. A lot of crew who worked on the original worked on ours as well, including a large number of the visual effects guys."
It's set nearly 30 years after the events of the original film, and the two stories aren't really connected other than they both include plenty of tornados.
Is Helen Hunt in Twisters?
No. Fans of the original Twister may be disappointed, but Helen Hunt does not appear in Twisters. There aren't cameos from the original actors in the movie although Bill Paxton's son does appear briefly in one scene.
Is there a trailer for Twisters?
Yes! The first trailer for Twisters dropped during the 2024 Super Bowl on Feb. 11, 2024.
A second trailer was released on May 8, 2024.
