Evan Rachel Wood shares photo from abusive relationship: 'I cut my wrist as a way to disarm him'

Evan Rachel Wood is opening up about a painful time in her life.

The Westworld star, who has talked about experiencing PTSD from rape and sexual abuse before, revealed she resorted to self-harm during an abusive relationship a few years ago. Wood, 31, made the admission on Twitter Monday while promoting the hashtag #IAmNotOk, which supports survivors of domestic violence.

The actress posted several pictures from a 2016 Gucci photoshoot, writing she “was emaciated, severely depressed, and could barely stand” that day. “I was so weakened by an abusive relationship,” she added.

In a follow-up tweet, the actress revealed she “resorted to self-harm” two years into that relationship. “When my abuser would threaten or attack me, I cut my wrist as a way to disarm him,” she exclaimed alongside a photo of the cuts. “It only made the abuse stop temporarily.”

Last year, Wood testified about being sexually assaulted in an effort to have Congress implement the 2016 Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights Act in every state.

“It started slow but escalated over time, including threats against my life, severe gaslighting and brainwashing, [and] waking up to the man that claimed to love me raping what he believed to be my unconscious body,” she declared, revealing she was assaulted by another man years later. “Being abused and raped previously made it easier for me to be raped again, not the other way round.”

Seven years after her rapes, she was diagnosed with long term PTSD.

“I struggled with self-harm to the point of two suicide attempts, which landed me in a psychiatric hospital for a short period of time,” she continued. (Wood opened up about her time in a mental health facility earlier this year.) “This was, however, a turning point in my life when I started seeking professional help to deal with my trauma and mental stress. But others are not so fortunate, and because of this rape is often more than a few minutes of trauma, but slow death.”

The actress has not publicly named any of her alleged abusers.

Wood has been in several high-profile relationships. She was on-off with Marilyn Manson starting in 2006, ultimately calling off their relationship for good in 2010 and ending a seven-month engagement. She and actor Jamie Bell split in 2014 after nearly two-years of marriage. They share 5-year-old son Jack and are friendly co-parents. In 2015, Wood met and began dating her Rebel and a Basketcase bandmate Zach Villa. The pair got engaged, but called things off in August 2017.

Wood has been sharing and retweeting other survivors stories using the hashtag #IAmNotOK.
