So who is Emily Deschanel’s husband? Here is everything to know about David Hornsby and his relationship with the actress.
He is from Houston
Hornsby credits some of his creative inspiration to his hometown, Houston.
“It’s little things. Texas has a distinct culture — cowboy boots, driving pickup trucks, etc. I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t really like wearing cowboy boots. I’m not into hunting. I’m more into [acting],' " he explained to the Texas Observer in 2022. "It helped me find my voice."
The actor went on to note the little ways Houston affected his way of life. "It also influenced how I dress because I wear my Astros cap everywhere," Hornsby added, referencing the city's baseball team.
He is a writer and executive producer
Hornsby not only stars in series and films, he also serves as an executive producer and writer. Most notably, he produces the fan-favorite sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Hornsby also writes and produces the comedy series Mythic Quest, which he told the Texas Observer is a blend of outright jokes and thoughtful character development. “One thing is that we try to have it be both genuinely funny, but also have some pathos,” Hornsby said. “We want to explore the other side of the characters dramatically, too."
The producer also explained why he wanted to make a show about video games. “I think there was this realization that we really haven’t done a show about the video game space on television," he said. "So it seemed like a good setting to generate stories that were both universal and could be very specific to this industry.”
He married Deschanel in 2010
Deschanel and Hornsby tied the knot in front of close friends and family on Sept. 25, 2010, in Los Angeles. Among the guests was her Bones costar David Boreanaz.
The Devil in Ohio star wore diamond drop earrings paired with a flowy blush gown for her big day.
He shares two sons with Deschanel
Deschanel and Hornsby welcomed their first child, Henry, on Sept. 21, 2011. Before his arrival, the actress told Fit Pregnancy that she loved the experience of waiting for Henry's birth.
“I really like being pregnant. Not that there aren’t things I don’t love, but when I think about what my body is doing — creating a child — it just blows my mind,” she said. Deschanel also explained that she and Hornsby would have help caring for Henry because of their busy schedules.
“I’m lucky because I’ll have a nanny and I’ll also be able to bring the baby to work," Deschanel said. The pair welcomed their second child, Calvin, in the summer of 2015.
He participated on a speech and debate team
Hornsby was very active on his speech and debate team in high school, an extracurricular he said set him up for a successful career.
“The debate people all went on to become lawyers and would argue about important issues. We were just the obnoxious actors. I actually competed on the national level,” Hornsby told the Texas Observer. “That was very encouraging for me. It was a really influential part of my life and my high school experience.”
The actor said this training gave him strong skills for life in the entertainment industry. “It prepared me for auditioning. You’d go into a science room at nine in the morning on a Saturday and find out that you’d have to perform a 10-minute comedy piece for people sitting at desks judging," Hornsby said.
His sister-in-law is Zooey Deschanel
Acting runs in the family — Hornsby's sister-in-law Zooey Deschanel has starred in many hit series and films including New Girl and (500) Days of Summer.
The two sisters also had their children around the same time — Calvin is just two months older than Zooey’s daughter Elsie Otter, whom she shares with her ex-husband Jacob Pechenik.

The siblings even worked at the same location when their sons were young. “We bring our babies to work, and yet it’s so hard to get them together,” the Bones star explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2016. “Because one will be down for a nap, and one will be up, and vice versa."
