Emilia Pérez’s Karla Sofía Gascón “Grateful to Be Back” as She Plans to Attend Oscars After Controversy (Exclusive)
Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón is set to attend this weekend’s Oscars following the recent controversy surrounding her offensive resurfaced tweets.
Gascón will attend the Academy Awards ceremony, where she is nominated for best actress, and Netflix, which released Emilia Pérez in November, is covering her travel costs, a source tells The Hollywood Reporter. It is customary for studios to cover travel for their Oscar nominees.

Gascón, who is the first openly trans woman to be nominated for a best actress Oscar, has kept a low profile of late and did not attend Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony, where she was nominated for best actress and was part of the ensemble nominated for best movie cast.
“I’m not sure how I feel, but I’m grateful to be back,” Gascón tells THR exclusively on Monday. “I’m grateful to all those who’ve believed in me — to Netflix, the production company and my colleagues. We can close this beautiful and difficult path that began three years ago.”
Gascón had been enjoying a heady awards season as the titular star of Emilia Pérez, which led the way among all Oscar-nominated films this year with 13 nods. But she has been the center of controversy in recent weeks after years-old tweets resurfaced, which included posts with racially charged comments about Black people, immigrants and Islam. Gascón has since apologized and said earlier this month that she would be stepping back from the movie’s Oscar campaign in order to let the film stand on its own.
Earlier this month, THR reported that Gascón would no longer be flying to the U.S. from her native Spain for a number of planned appearances, including such events as the AFI Awards luncheon on Feb. 6 and the Critics Choice Awards and PGA Awards that weekend.
Emilia Pérez follows the titular cartel boss (Gascón), who enlists unappreciated lawyer Rita (Salda?a) to help Emilia fake her own death and get a fresh start by embracing her true gender identity.
Page Six was first to report that Gascón is set to fly to L.A. to attend the March 2 ceremony.
