Ed Sheeran reaches Spotify milestone with 2 billion streams

Fresh off the announcement that he would be adding a second leg to his North American tour this fall, Ed Sheeran just became the second artist to reach two billion streams on Spotify. Eminem achieved the honor earlier this year.

According to The Telegraph, Sheeran was the most-streamed artist of 2014, with Spotify listeners tuning in 860 million times. The popular singer/songwriter released his second studio album, X, that year which would go on to be nominated at the 2015 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year.

While artists like Taylor Swift have pulled their music from the streaming service, according to the BBC, Sheeran seems happy to stick with it.

“I’m playing sold-out gigs in South America, I’ve sold out arenas in Korea and south-east Asia,” Sheeran said at the BBC Music Awards last year. “I don’t think I’d be able to do that without Spotify. For me, Spotify is not even a necessary evil. It helps me do what I want to do.”

Sheeran’s North American summer tour sold out most venues immediately, prompting the additional fall dates. He’s also joining the line-up of acts set to perform at the Billboard Music Awards along with Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Meghan Trainor, and more.
