Who Is Dustin Hoffman's Wife? All About Lisa Hoffman
Dustin Hoffman and his wife, Lisa Hoffman, married in 1980
Dustin Hoffman and his wife, Lisa Hoffman, know a thing or two about long-lasting love.
The two have decades of marriage under their proverbial belt, and they work hard at keeping the love alive.
“We’ve been married 36 years and together 40 years,” Lisa told The Daily Telegraph in 2016. “I say in Hollywood it is like dog years so you have to multiply that by seven. Maybe we are more in love [than when we got married] … it continues to grow.”
After raising their four children in various locations around the world because of her husband’s filming commitments, Lisa followed her passions and created her own skincare and perfume line, aptly named Lisa Hoffman; the fragrance line continues to be an award-winning favorite.
So who is Dustin Hoffman's wife? Here’s everything to know about Lisa Hoffman and her relationship with the actor.
She’s a native Californian
Lisa Jo Gottsegen was born in September 1954 to parents William and Marcia and grew up in Los Angeles. Today, she and Dustin are primarily based in Los Angeles but frequently spend time in New York City.
Dustin and Lisa’s families were good friends
According to Lisa, Dustin’s mother was close with her grandmother and that’s how she was introduced to the actor, who is 17 years her senior. They first met when Lisa was a child and reconnected when she was in her 20s.
When the pair met again at Lisa’s grandfather’s funeral, there was an instant connection.
"My grandfather had recently passed away and Dustin came to pay his condolences," Lisa shared in 2007. "That first look and I knew ... Dustin asked how many children I wanted. I said six, and he said he had two already, so would four be okay. And that's exactly the way it has played out.”
She holds a law degree
Lisa graduated with a degree in psychology from Colorado University and later went back to school to get her law degree. Despite the fact that she didn’t put it to use, it was something she wanted to do for herself.
“I knew that having a law career wouldn't be possible once I started traveling around with Dustin, but I also knew that I needed to complete this one thing for myself," Lisa explained.
They married in 1980
Lisa and Dustin tied the knot in Connecticut on Oct. 12, 1980 and honeymooned in Hawaii, a location the pair hold dear. (It even inspired one of Lisa’s fragrance scents; more on that below!)
She’s a mother of four
Together, Lisa and Dustin have four children.
Jacob Edward, their eldest, was born in 1981, with daughter Rebecca Lilian following in 1983. Son Maxwell Geoffrey joined the family in 1984 and Alexandra Lydia rounded out the group in 1987. (Dustin has two daughters, Karina and Jenna, from his first marriage.)
She founded a fragrance and scented jewelry line
Lisa studied perfumery in Grasse, France, and eventually founded her eponymous skincare and fragrance line, as well as scented jewelry inspired by a pair of earrings from her husband. The perfumes are evocative of Lisa’s travels, including a French Clary Sage and Hawaiian Plumeria.
“Each scent in Lisa’s diverse fragrance line has been crafted to capture the essence of her favorite destinations from around the world to effortlessly transport women to places filled with beauty and tranquility,” her website explains.
If you’re looking for a more unique way to wear scent, Hoffman combined her love of fine jewelry and fragrance in a line of scent-infused earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Simply choose your favorite piece and fill it with scented Fragrance Beads of your choice to waft a gentle hint of fragrance wherever you go.
Fragrance is a deeply personal passion of Lisa’s, as she wrote on her brand’s blog in 2018.
“One of my earliest childhood memories is playing in my grandmother Blanche’s bathroom and going through her beauty items,” she wrote. “To this day, the slightest hint of Chanel No. 5 and Shalimar hold a special place in my heart ... as they have somehow captured for me a bit of Nanny Blanche’s soul.”
Lisa didn’t want her brand to be known as a celebrity project. “That was an obstacle to overcome, that this is not a celebrity brand,” she explained in 2016. “I am so far from a celebrity, I just happen to be married to an actor.”
They prioritize their family
Lisa and Dustin raised their kids in a variety of locations, depending on Dustin’s filming schedule, but one thing never changed no matter where they were: family was always first.
"Our priority was to be with the kids. Even if we had a social obligation later, we would have dinner with the children first and go out afterward,” Lisa explained.
Family dinners continue to be one of the Hoffman clan’s favorite ways to enjoy quality time. “We still all love being round the table together." In their younger days, the kids even got to appear as extras in Dustin’s movies.
This was a big commitment, but the couple made it work even across time zones, enrolling their kids in local schools or getting tutors while Dustin worked.
“One of the challenges that actors have is that they travel often for their jobs,” Lisa shared of their jet-setting lifestyle. “Dustin and I made the decision immediately that we would stick together and no matter how challenging it was for our children or for us, we went everywhere with him, the whole group of us. We went with him to make his movies, from Morocco to Cincinnati, and I think it helped being together.”
Her favorite holiday is Thanksgiving
Hoffman loves spending time with her family and honoring special traditions.
“There’s nothing more important to me than being with those I love,” she shared in 2016. “Our family tradition has been to hunker down at home for a few days of cooking, eating, playing games in front of the fire, watching movies, working through family dynamics, and just enjoying each other.”
Apparently she’s known for her “craveable” cranberry sauce recipe, which you can find on her website for your own holiday gathering.
