Dua Lipa is ready to move on from the disco influence of her last album, Future Nostalgia, into psychedelic territory. Reportedly helping the pop star make the journey is Kevin Parker, the leader of the psych-rock act Tame Impala.
As described in a new profile published in The New York Times Style Magazine, Lipa’s third studio album, due out in 2024, will be “informed” by “1970s-era psychedelia” as opposed to the house and disco instrumentals that powered hits from Future Nostalgia like “Don’t Start Now” and “Physical.” Parker has been rumored to be one of the musicians in the small group of songwriting collaborators working on the upcoming record.
According to The Times, Lipa “all but confirm[ed]” the rumor when she said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about” in response to a question about it and laughed a little while looking away. It’s worth noting, however, that Lipa isn’t going full psych-rock. Her next album will remain pop because she doesn’t want to “alienate” fans and cause them to “have a meltdown.”
Back in November 2022, fans of both musicians put a magnifying glass to one of Lipa’s Instagram photo dumps and concluded she had been working with Parker. In one photo, Lipa was drinking wine in front of a railing matching one at Parker’s LA home, while another contains studio monitors that fans tied to Parker’s recording studio. Apparently, Parker’s manager and his wife also liked the photos.
Lipa has expressed admiration for Parker’s work dating back to 2018, when she revealed that he was her dream collaborator. “I would love to make an album with Kevin Parker, from Tame Impala,” she told Copa90 (via NME). “I just think what [Tame Impala] do is really cool.” Five years later, it seems like Lipa has gotten her wish.
Earlier this month, Lipa made her acting debut when Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie’s Barbie hit theaters. She also contributed our Song of the Week “Dance the Night” to the movie’s dance-inducing soundtrack. Meanwhile, Tame Impala also landed a song on Barbie: The Album, recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of Lonerism with a special box set, and teamed up with Thundercat for a song titled “No More Lies.”
