DreamWorks Animation to Scare Up New Release Date for ‘B.O.O.’

DreamWorks Animation is considering moving “B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations” out of summer 2015, when it would currently face off against Pixar’s “Inside Out” two weeks later.

The toon studio has yet to officially announce a new spot on the calendar for “B.O.O,” that revolves around a school for ghosts. Anthony Leondis directs the film that features the voices of Seth Rogen, Melissa McCarthy, Rashida Jones and Matthew Bomer.

DWA originally dated “B.O.O.” for June 5, 2015, but Pixar has “Inside Out” scheduled for June 19, targeting the same audience.

Last month, “B.O.O.” was considered the first of several films DWA was likely to move.

“We have a release schedule, and there’s going to be a lot of flexibility and maneuverability in that release schedule,” Katzenberg said in a conference call with Wall Street analysts to discuss DWA’s third quarter results, citing Marvel’s major slate reveal on Tuesday. “Some of those conflict with some of our opportunities.”At the time, Marvel Studios was the primary reason for “B.O.O.’s” new release date, considering the film is wedged between “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Ant-Man,” out May and July. For 2016, DWA has “Boss Baby” dated on March 18, and “Trolls” on Nov. 4, 2016 — the same date that Marvel has “Doctor Strange,” meaning that DWA will likely shift that toon, as well.“Captain Underpants” is currently set for Jan. 13, 2017; and “Monkeys of Mumbai,” on March 10, 2017.

“B.O.O.” would have been DWA’s third release in 2015. It also has “Home,” out March 27,” and ” Kung Fu Panda 3,” on Dec. 23. A Spring 2016 release is now likely, according to sources.DWA is considering a new date for “B.O.O.” as the company is looking to best position its films’ release dates after a string of disappointments. It scored with “How to Train Your Dragon 2″ this summer and has “The Penguins of Madagascar” out Nov. 26.The expected shift also comes shortly after DWA ended discussions of a potential sale to toymaker Hasbro.
