Donald Trump Backs Down From His Beef With The Pope
Donald Trump is toning things down in his public conflict with Pope Francis. The Republican frontrunner recently stooped to a new low in the most scandalous primary election to date by condemning el Papa’s recent voyage to Mexico and engaging in a war of words with him.
Trump’s latest verbal assault occurred shortly after Francis claimed the business tycoon “is not Christian” during his visit to Mexico. Francis questioned Trump’s faith because of his views on the deportation of undocumented immigrants and plans to build a wall between the United States and Mexico. “A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” said Francis. “This is not in the gospel.”
As usual, Trump rallied up his constituents before he delivered a pompous response that included calling the leader of the Catholic church “disgraceful.”
“No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith,” the former Apprentice host said. “If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS’s ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president.”
Trump has been all but reserved about his opinions on Francis’ controversial trip to Mexico. In an interview with Fox Business’ “Varney & Company” last week, Trump condemned his visit and claimed Francis “doesn’t understand the problems our country has.”
“Mexico got him to do it because Mexico wants to keep the border just the way it is because they’re making a fortune and we’re losing,” he added.
Trump has since developed a change of heart. During last night’s GOP town hall in South Carolina, Trump called the Pope a “wonderful guy” and, of course, blamed the media for blowing everything out proportion. “I don’t think this is a fight,” he said candidly. “I think he said something much softer than was originally reported by the media.” Oh? How convenient.
We can just see it now. Pope Francis to Trump: “Donald, WHAT’S GOOD?”
