During the video, concept artist John Howe explained how the rings are based on Germanic and Norse mythological rings of invisilbility. “I think that is the prime source of Tolkien’s inspiration for the rings,” Howe said.
“The Rings of Power” Season 2 premieres August 29, with Ciarán Hinds, Rory Kinnear, Tanya Moodie, and Charlie Vickers joining the ensemble cast. The trailer was unveiled during San Diego Comic Con 2024.
The series is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” books. Beginning in a time of relative peace, “The Rings of Power” charts the political upheaval in Middle-earth as evil returns to the land. The official Season 2 synopsis reads: “With Sauron, after being cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-Earth to his sinister will.”
“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” made history on Prime Video with Season 1 being viewed by more than 100 million people worldwide and driving more Prime sign-ups worldwide during its launch window than any other previous content to date, per a press statement.
J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are the showrunners and executive producers of the series. More “Lord of the Rings” is also on the way in the form of the upcoming animated feature “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” and Warner Bros.’ “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” which will be directed by Andy Serkis.
