‘How did I get so lucky?’ Bears’ Jonathan Owens eager to cheer on wife Simone Biles at Paris Olympics

CHICAGO — Bears’ safety Jonathan Owens will soon be Paris-bound to watch his wife chase gold.

Owens will leave Monday night, July 29, to support his wife, Simone Biles, at the Olympics. He and his agent requested that he be able to do so when he signed a two-year multi-million dollar contract this past offseason to play in Chicago.

The Bears obliged and Owens spoke about the opportunity on Thursday.

“Watching Simone, it’s amazing. Words can’t even describe it,” the 29-year-old said. “How did I get so lucky? Someone that’s literally at the pinnacle of their sport and I get to call her my wife.”

When asked if it would be nerve-racking watching his wife compete for Olympic gold, Owens replied, “Absolutely.”

Said Owens: “Anytime you get nervous, it’s a good thing because you care. It’s such a tough sport and she does things that no one else in the world can do, so I’m always nervous and praying for her safety and praying for a clear head so she can go out there and continue to do what she does.”

While his absence means he will miss a portion of training camp, Owens said his new teammates have been more than supportive.

“Everyone is a gymnastics fan now,” Owens said.

As far as his own training, Owens shared that he’s working to become one percent better each day, focused on learning his new teammates and a new defensive scheme after spending last season as a NFC North rival Green Bay Packer.

Owens and Biles married in the spring of 2023. The Paris Olympic Games begin Friday night.
