Diane Warren Brings Ruth Bader Ginsburg Doll to the Oscars Red Carpet

Diane Warren is paying tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the Academy Awards!

The legendary songwriter, who is nominated for Best Original Song for “I’ll Fight,” tucked a small Ginsburg doll into her pocket for the Oscars red carpet.

“I’ll Fight,” which is performed by Jennifer Hudson, was featured in the documentary RBG. The documentary, based on Ginsburg’s life, is also nominated for an Oscar: it will compete in the Best Documentary category.

“RBG decided to come with me!” Warren, 62, told PeopleTV of her miniature plus-one on the Red Carpet Live special. “She’s really healthy! She’s smaller than you thought, right?”

Of writing “I’ll Fight” for RBG, Warren said: “I was never going to say no to [this movie]… I love writing songs that can say something. The last few songs I’ve been nominated for — last year it was ‘Stand Up for Something’ with Andra Day and Common, Lady Gaga‘s ‘Til It Happens to You’ and now ‘I’ll Fight.’ I felt like it was the third song in the trilogy.”

When asked if she writes songs for movies differently than she writes pop songs, Warren said there wasn’t a difference.

“No, I mean I’m trying to write a great song. You always hope, if it’s a song in a movie, that it gets a shot. And I’ve been really lucky… To me, everything I write is a pop song. It could be a song that makes you feel good or a song that makes you think or feel.”

Ginsburg, 85, has had her share of health troubles recently.

The Supreme Court justice, after previously surviving colon and pancreatic cancer, had to undergo surgery on Dec. 21 in Manhattan to remove two cancerous nodules in her lungs, which were found after a fall that broke three of her ribs.

Since leaving the hospital on Christmas Day, Ginsburg has been recovering at home where she continues to work on cases before the Supreme Court through briefs and transcripts of the oral arguments, according to a spokeswoman in January.

Her recuperation is going well, the spokeswoman added. The court previously said that, following her lung surgery, she was cancer free.

“We were excited to be the ones to give Justice Ginsburg the good news that RBG has been nominated for Best Documentary,” they said.“She congratulated us and said the nomination was ‘eminently well-deserved.’”

From their conversation, they said Ginsburg sounded “strong and cheerful.” Indefatigable even in her ninth decade, she told them “she is writing opinions and continuing to stay on top of work.”

The 91st Academy Awards will be broadcasting live from Los Angeles on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT on ABC.
