Daytime Emmys: ‘General Hospital’ extends Best Drama record, Dick Van Dyke makes history
“General Hospital” was the big winner at the 51st Daytime Emmys, presented on Friday night, June 7, 2024. It claimed four trophies: Best Supporting Actor (Robert Gossett), Best Writing Team, Best Directing Team and Best Drama Series. It has now won Best Drama for four years in a row. That’s the longest winning streak in Daytime Emmys history. Check out the list of Daytime Emmy winners here.
But the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences spread the wealth during Friday’s event. Across the five acting categories, for instance, all four broadcast soaps came away with at least one victory. Gossett took the aforementioned Supporting Actor trophy to start off the night. “The Young and the Restless” claimed Best Actress (Michelle Stafford) and Best Supporting Actress (Courtney Hope). “The Bold and the Beautiful” won Best Actor (Thorsten Kaye, claiming his second trophy in a row). And “Days of Our Lives” was responsible for a very special moment when TV legend Dick Van Dyke claimed Best Guest Performer, becoming the oldest actor ever to win at the Daytime Emmys at age 98.

Outside of the soap world, “The Kelly Clarkson Show” won an unsurprising fourth trophy in a row for Best Daytime Talk Series. However, Best Daytime Talk Host didn’t go to Kelly Clarkson herself. Even though she had won for four straight years, NATAS decided to shake things up by awarding married duo Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos for presiding over “Live with Kelly and Mark.” Ripa has now won that award with four different co-hosts: Regis Philbin (2011-2012), Michael Strahan (2015-2016), Ryan Seacrest (2019) and now Consuelos (2024).
They weren’t the only spouses feted by the academy. Producer Edward J. Scott and actress Melody Thomas Scott celebrated dual Lifetime Achievement Awards for their work in daytime. Melody Thomas Scott has played Nikki Newman on “Y&R” for more than 40 years, while Edward Scott has produced soaps and racked up trophies throughout his own decades-long career.
