Dark Winds Scores Early Renewal Ahead of Season 3 Premiere
AMC Networks’ acclaimed period drama Dark Winds has been renewed for a fourth season, nearly two weeks ahead of its Season 3 premiere on Sunday, March 9 (on AMC and AMC+).
The eight-episode Season 4 — which is set to begin filming this March in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with an eye on a 2026 release — will mark the directorial debut of series star and executive producer Zahn McClarnon.

“I’m looking forward to exploring and inhabiting the character of Joe Leaphorn once again in Season 4, and I’m excited to make my directorial debut on a show that means so much to me,” McClarnon said in a statement. “And of course, I’m most thrilled to be spending time with this wonderful cast and crew whom I have grown to love.”
Starring McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon, Jessica Matten and Deanna Allison — all of whom will be coming by TVLine’s New York video studio on March 5 for a TVLine Spotlight Q&A! — Dark Winds follows Lt. Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito of the Navajo Tribal Police solving mysteries on their reservation as it is besieged by increasingly violent crimes in the 1970s.
Season 3 picks up six months after the events of Season 2 and follows Leaphorn and Chee as they investigate the disappearance of two boys, with only an abandoned bicycle and blood-stained patch of ground left in their wake. Meanwhile, Bernadette Manuelito attempts to settle into her new life 500 miles from home with the Border Patrol, but stumbles across a conspiracy involving human and drug smuggling with far-reaching implications.
Guest stars for Season 3 include the aforementioned Jenna Elfman (Fear the Walking Dead) as FBI Special Agent Sylvia Washington, Bruce Greenwood (The Resident) as Tom Spenser, Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayans M.C.) as Budge, Tonantzin Carmelo (NCIS: Origins) as Border Patrol Agent Eleanda Garza, Alex Meraz (Animal Kingdom) as Border Patrol Agent Ivan Mu?os, Terry Serpico (Law & Order SVU) as Border Patrol Senior Chief Ed Henry, Derek Hinkey (American Primeval) as Shorty Bowlegs, Phil Burke (Rabbit Hole) as Michael Halsey, and Christopher Heyerdahl (Hell on Wheels) as Dr. Reynolds.
