#FreeBritney heats up again after Jamie Lynn Spears is eliminated from 'DWTS'
The second week of Dancing With the Stars saw actress Jamie Lynn Spears being sent home, an exit that seemed to coincide with a re-ignition of the #FreeBritney online movement that was previously created in support of Jamie Lynn’s sister, Britney Spears.
Here’s a look at how Jamie Lynn found her way into the bottom two and beyond on DWTS, and why fans of Britney were happy with the night’s outcome.
Jamie Lynn’s dance
It was Latin night on the show this week, with dances performed to music celebrating Latin heritage. Jamie Lynn danced a cha-cha with her partner Alan Bersten that earned a score of 16 out of a possible 30.
That score was good enough to beat four other groups, including real estate mogul Mauricio Umansky and partner Emma Slater, whose salsa scored just 12 points.
Unfortunately for Jamie Lynn and Bersten, DWTS combines judges’ scores with viewer voting results and they found themselves in the bottom two along with former NFL star Adrian Peterson and partner Britt Stewart, who scored a 15 by dancing a samba.
In the end it was Jamie Lynn who said goodbye. She was also one of the first ones to leave the Fox reality show Special Forces: World's Toughest Test back in January, leaving in the third episode because she missed her children.
Jamie Lynn's relationship with Britney
Many viewers reacting on social media credited the “Britney army” for Jamie Lynn’s departure, and here’s why.
After what was a publicly close relationship for many years, things started to sour when Jamie Lynn was named a trustee of Britney's SJB Revocable Trust in 2018. The trust was established in 2004 to protect Britney's financial assets for her children. Some of Britney's fans accused Jamie Lynn of profiting off of her sister, allegations Jamie Lynn denied.
The following year, Jamie Lynn seemingly lashed out on social media at Britney fans who were critical of the pop star’s younger sibling for not being more supportive during the #FreeBritney movement, especially given Jamie Lynn's role as a trustee. A couple of years later at Britney’s conservatorship hearing in 2021, her testimony included the line, "I would honestly like to sue my family."
The conservatorship was terminated later that year, with bad blood continuing to pop up in social media posts from both parties around that time and beyond. Britney threatened legal action against Jamie Lynn after the latter spoke a lot about Britney in both her book and promotional tour.
Britney’s army
After Jamie Lynn’s elimination, fans of Britney took to social media using a variety of themes that were used in the past to show support, like “Justice for Britney,” “Free Britney” and “Britney b***h.”
