Cynthia Erivo Puts an Elphaba twist on the Skirt Suit in Dior at Sundance Film Festival
Cynthia Erivo got into character at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. The “Wicked” star, who was nominated this week for an Academy Award for her starring role in the musical adaptation, continued her method dressing spree while in Park City, Utah.
When Erivo arrived on Friday night at the Sundance Institute gala where she was being honored with the Visionary Award, she did so in a Dior skirt suit with an Elphaba twist. Erivo wore a sculptural jacquard jacket off her shoulders, sashed at the waist with a trailing leather belt. She styled the blazer with an ankle-grazing pencil skirt, a pair of tonal suede Christian Louboutin platform boots with a stiletto heel, diamond-encrusted layered hoop earrings, and a manicure consisting of the gem-topped nails she’s been wearing throughout the “Wicked” press tour — this time heavy with emeralds, gold tones, and rhinestones.

Erivo has been favoring sculptural looks on her “Wicked” press tour over the past year, especially when it comes to suiting and dresses. For the 2025 Golden Globes, she defied gravity in a floral Louis Vuitton gown that featured a tier floating above her hips.
While on the red carpet, she spoke about her approach to method dressing, saying, “Green is Elphaba’s color, but what she wears a lot is black. So I’ve been trying to mess around with the shapes and structure of black dresses. We’ve been playing around with it, and bringing green in occasionally.”
Erivo was styled by Jason Bolden for the occasion, who has helped define Erivo’s take on Elphaba’s style throughout the “Wicked” press tour. Bolden also curated Erivo’s sculptural leather coat dress look for a November appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” sourced from Salon 1884’s spring 2025 collection.
Erivo also channeled Elphaba in a dramatic black hooded gown at the 2024 CFDA Fashion Awards, where she was in the mermaid silhouette dress with a plunging V-neckline by Zac Posen via GapStudio. Posen serves as Gap Inc.‘s creative director, a position he has held since February 2024.
No doubt Erivo will pay homage to her “Wicked” character at this year’s upcoming Academy Awards ceremony as well, where Erivo is up for Best Actress. “Wicked” was nominated in 10 categories at this year’s installment of the Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande’s role as Glinda, Best Costume Design — led by Paul Tazewell — Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound.
The 97th installment of the Academy Awards takes place March 2 at 7 p.m. ET/ 4 p.m. PT on ABC, Hulu Live TV, YouTube TV, AT&T TV and FuboTV.
