Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were paid the same for 'Wicked' performances

While "Wicked" may be defying gravity, the studio responsible for the musical blockbuster had to clarify that there wasn't something bad in how its stars were paid.
Universal Pictures issued a statement obtained by USA TODAY Tuesday that clarified that "Wicked" stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were paid the same amount for their work on the film.
The studio issued the statement as social media rumors about a large pay gap between the two began swirling.
“Reports of pay disparity between Cynthia and Ariana are completely false and based on internet fodder,” the statement read. “The women received equal pay for their work on ‘Wicked.'”
The company did not state how much the pair were paid in the statement.
'Wicked' has six-figure opening weekend
The first part of the screen adaptation of the stage musical based on the book by Gregory McGuire topped the global box office in its opening weekend, raking in $164.2 million with $114 million of that coming from North American theaters.
It was the biggest opening weekend for a film based on a Broadway musical, ahead of the global debut of Universal's 2012 release "Les Miserables," according to the studio.
The second act of the film is set to hit theaters in 2025.
