Conan O’Brien Reveals How Adam Sandler’s Oscars Bit Came Together: “That Was All Adam”
After hosting the 2025 Oscars ceremony, Conan O’Brien is offering insight into the origin of his memorable monologue bit with Adam Sandler.
O’Brien told Entertainment Tonight after the telecast that he initially reached out to his former Saturday Night Live colleague to involve him in a different way for the Academy Awards. In the bit that aired during Sunday’s ceremony, Sandler was seen wearing his typical loose-fitting attire of a hoodie and gym shorts and jokingly stormed out of the Dolby Theatre when O’Brien called him out about it.

“We had an idea for Sandler,” O’Brien said. “Adam and I are old friends, and I called him up. He liked the idea, and then he said, ‘I have another idea.’ And it involved him dressing in the way that he’s most comfortable — which of course was his idea because he doesn’t want to put on a tux.”
The host continued, “And then his idea was so great. I mean, that was all Adam. Adam’s the king.”
The Hollywood Reporter reported Sunday that Sandler was wearing a $175 neon blue logo hoodie from L.A.-based label Aviator Nation and that the item was already nearly sold out shortly after the monologue aired.
During the Oscars segment, O’Brien quipped that Sandler was “dressed like a guy playing video poker at 2 a.m.” This led the star, soon to be seen in Netflix’s Happy Gilmore 2, to reply, “You know what, Conan? I like the way I look because I’m a good person.”
In his review of the 2025 Oscars, THR chief television critic Daniel Fienberg noted that O’Brien was “a fully capable host, and some of the writing within the telecast was impressively sharp.” He added, “Even if I’d have trimmed several of his extended gags, I thought he came across like somebody who has hosted shows and hosted them well in the past. Which he is.”
