Comic-Con 2016: Voltron: Legendary Defender season 2 coming this year
Voltron: Legendary Defender finally got to spill their own Jon Snow-level secret on Thursday: Season 2 will land by the end of 2016. Show executive producers Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery and head writer Tim Hedrick told EW's Tim Leong at EW's Con-X on Friday how big of a relief it was to share the news.
"We kept getting that question [about season 2] over and over and again and were forced to lie to a lot of people's faces unfortunately when asked about it for quite a while," Dos Santos said.
Voltron is based on the '80s series that followed astronaut pilots of the giant titular robot. The revival focuses on five teenagers, and debuted on Netflix last month with voice work from Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), Bex Taylor-Klaus (Scream: The TV Series), and Kimberly Brooks (Mass Effect) in its 11 episodes.
The trio said they knew well ahead of time a sophomore season was in the cards. That helped make season 1 with a cliffhanger — and Montgomery accomplish her goal of making Pidge a female member of the crew.

"It was just something that we really wanted to do," she said. "Lucky for us, DreamWorks was 100 percent behind it, which can sometimes can be somewhat of a difficult thing with a toy-based show.... It was literally the first thing I asked for."
Being a reboot property, Voltron has lured fans of the original series and new, young ones to watch together. Seeing entire families at conventions who rave about the show has been rewarding for the trio.
"We did a signing today, and multiple said, 'I watched this show with my whole family,'" Dos Santos said. "Everybody can appreciate it for different reasons."
Dos Santos, Montgomery, and Hedrick all worked on the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel, The Legend of Korra.
Voltron's 13-episode season 2 arrives later this year on Netflix.
