Comedy Central revives Crank Yankers, taps David Spade for late-night series
Comedy Central has made the call to dial up Crank Yankers again.
The cable network announced Monday at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour in Pasadena, Calif., that it has ordered 20 new episodes of the puppets-making-prank-calls comedy. Created by Jimmy Kimmel, Adam Carolla, and Daniel Kellison, Crank Yankers originally ran from 2002 to 2005 on Comedy Central and resurfaced for a fourth season on MTV2 in 2007. In this new incarnation of the show, the puppets will target unsuspecting people on phones, as well as “social media, e-sport platforms, and any venue where trouble can be made,” according to the network. “Crank Yankers has always been my favorite show to make,” said Kimmel — whose brother Jonathan will serve as showrunner — in a statement. “Nothing is more fun or makes me laugh harder than a great crank call and I am thrilled that Comedy Central asked us to do it again. At this time, I would like to ask all Americans to disable their caller ID. Thank you.”
In addition, Comedy Central released the first trailer for its new scripted comedy South Side. Set in a blue-collar South Side neighborhood in Chicago, the series centers on two friends and community college grads (Bashir Salahuddin and Diallo Riddle) who have huge dreams but find themselves toiling at a business called Rent-T-Own. Season 1 guest stars include Lil Rel Howery, Jeff Tweedy, and Kel Mitchell.
Lastly, Comedy Central announced that its freshman series The Other Two will be back for a second season. Created by former SNL head writers Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider, the show stars Drew Tarver and Heléne Yorke as adult siblings whose little brother (Case Walker) becomes a viral superstar. The Other Two premiered Jan. 24.
