Colbert shocked by Trump ads during 'The Late Show': 'I can't believe I'm getting checks from Donald Trump, and they cleared'
During what is already, by far, the most expensive campaign season in U.S. history, Stephen Colbert was shocked to find out Wednesday where some of President Trump’s ad dollars are going: The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Colbert also noted that Trump has prioritized running ads during reruns of The Andy Griffith Show, and that both Trump and Joe Biden have been advertising during reruns of The Big Bang Theory.
But Trump advertising during The Late Show is particularly surprising because the campaign is reportedly dangerously low on cash, having had to pull ads in some key swing states, and Colbert rarely, if ever, speaks kindly of the president. Trump has reportedly aired almost 1,200 ads during the show.
“Wow. Has he seen how I talk about him on this show?” Colbert asked in disbelief, before making a reference to Trump’s alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels: “Well I guess it wouldn’t be the first time Trump’s paid someone to spank him.”
A Trump ad attacking Joe Biden actually did run in certain markets during Wednesday’s airing of The Late Show, not long after Colbert used the White House’s latest claim about Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, listing ending the pandemic as one of Trump’s accomplishments before walking it back, to take a couple more shots at the president.
“I’d say this is Donald Trump peeing on our leg and telling us it’s raining, but he usually pays Russian prostitutes to do that,” Colbert said before playing a clip of Trump saying, “I’m Donald J. Trump and I approve this message.” Colbert then added, “Thank you, sir. I can’t believe I’m getting checks from Donald Trump, and they cleared.”
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
