Celebrities react as Joe Biden wins U.S. presidency: 'The people have spoken!'

On Saturday, Joe Biden secured 290 electoral votes to win the U.S. presidency, as projected by the Associated Press. And the world, including Hollywood, reacted with heavy emotion.

“America, I’m honored that you have chosen me to lead our great country,” Biden tweeted. “The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: I will be a President for all Americans — whether you voted for me or not. I will keep the faith that you have placed in me.”

Kamala Harris — officially the first woman and first woman of color to become vice president — shared an Instagram video of herself talking on the phone to Biden. “We did it, we did it, Joe. You’re going to be the next president of the United States.”

Celebrities who cheered the Biden-Harris ticket gleefully shared the news on social media. While stars who support President Trump vented, as he cited unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud and legal action through lawyer Rudy Giuliani in a Saturday press conference and on Twitter.

Lady Gaga, who campaigned for Biden on Monday in Pennsylvania, where she urged supporters to “Vote like your children’s lives depends on it, because they do” and performed several of her hit songs, shared her joy. “@JoeBide @KamalaHarris and the American people, you just gave the world one of the greatest acts of kindness and bravery humanity has ever seen,” she wrote on Instagram.

The View co-host Meghan McCain wrote, “One of the truly decent and moral men I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. Please lead our nation bravely towards healing and bipartisanship. Godspeed.”

Jennifer Lopez shared a festive video of herself dancing onstage. “PRESIDENT BIDEN!!!!!!! VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS!!!!!!”

Lizzo shared a very emotional video, bordering on the edge of disbelief that Biden won. “I think Trump is out of office. Officially,” she said. “I’m seeing the news everywhere. I think this is the end of that four-year term that felt like a thousand years.”

She added, “And I’m so ready to see if America can hold itself accountable.”

“The people have spoken!” wrote Kerry Washington. And a longtime Trump critic Kathy Griffin re-tweeted Harris’s video writing, “Love her. More like her, please. Fellas, love you, but are you guys ok if the ladies have some real power to get to work? These women are going to jet the job done.”

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays a former senator turned vice-president on the television show Veep tweeted, “‘Madam Vice President’” is no longer a fictional character.”

Reese Witherspoon added, “Today is a monumental day. No matter what side you are on, let's take a moment to recognize how far women have come in this country. Thinking about all those who shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for a woman to *finally* be Vice President of the United States makes me so emotional. Sojourner Truth. Harriet Tubman. Shirley Chisholm. Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Kamala Harris. I salute them all. And to the young girls of our nation... DREAM BIG. Anything is possible.”

“‘It’s easier to be a parent this morning,’” wrote Sarah Michelle Gellar, quoting CNN host Van Jones who broke down in tears on television Saturday while sharing the personal impact of a Biden presidency.

The actress shared a photo of Harris, Supreme Court Justice and women’s rights activist Ruth Bader Ginsburg (who died in Sept) and Stacy Abrams, who many credit for increasing Democratic votes in Georgia and fighting voter suppression with her organization Fair Fight 2020.

Gellar continued, “And as the mother of a daughter, I will never forget the moment that we watched together, as the first woman was called as Vice President elect. And, as the mother of a son, to show him that men and women are partners and can accomplish anything when paired with respect.”

"My god it feels like I just took off a weighted blanket, unhooked my bra and taken out my extensions all at once,” tweeted Chrissy Teigen. Husband John Legend wrote to Biden and Harris, “Thank you for choosing to serve your country during these challenging times."

Kim Kardashian shared a photo of Biden and Harris with a blue heart emoji. Viola Davis wrote, “Woooooohooooo!!!!!!”

Meanwhile, Trump supporter and actress Kirstie Alley tweeted a response to a follower who urged her to be gracious. “You are kidding right,” she tweeted. While Scott Baio tweeted, “Liberals cheat and don't even care how the ‘old white man’ won. Republicans still have the Senate, the Supreme Court and know the truth. Peace.”
