John Legend, Chris Martin, Pink and other stars entertain online amid coronavirus quarantine
For Hollywood’s entertainers, the show will go on amid the coronavirus pandemic — even if the venues have changed.
As tours are halted, productions shuttered, movie theaters closed and everyone takes a big timeout to create social distance, homebound singers, comedians and other talents have taken to social media to continue to entertain — many of them live performances.
On the heels of Patton Oswalt doing a comedy set on his lawn, we’ve been treated to concerts by Pink and Chris Martin, jokes from David Spade and Miley Cyrus even launched a new web show. Here’s what’s playing free on your own device.
Coldplay’s Chris Martin
Martin did a “mini gig” from home, apart from his band (“we’re stuck in different countries”), to check in with fans, see how they are feeling and be at their service musically. Martin played tunes (“Yellow” and “Viva La Vida” included) and chatted with watchers during the life stream, dubbing the session “Together, At Home” — and tagged John Legend to take it over and perform next. (Legend agreed — and will do it Tuesday.)
Keith Urban
With his biggest fan — Nicole Kidman — in attendance, Urban played a live 30-minute session from a warehouse where he stores his equipment. Like Martin, Urban had been scheduled to play yesterday, so he did it anyway — to “bring a little entertainment to your screens” from their “bunker.” Kidman also adorably acted as backup singer and dancer.
Katharine McPhee and David Foster
The singer and Grammy-winning producer, who were married last year, teamed up for an impromptu concert live in their home that saw them performing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable” and Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile.” Funny moment? When he called her out for using one of his Grammys to hold up her phone, which was streaming the show. They said his daughter, Erin Foster, suggested they perform together — and will try to make a it a daily thing while they quarantine.
Pink
The singer said she decided to learn the piano “once and for all” during self-quarantine, adding a skeptical “we’ll see,” and shared a lesson/“free concert” that saw her singing Adele’s “Make You Feel My Love.” It was “beautiful,” said Courteney Cox, just one of the many commenters who enjoyed Pink’s performance.
David Spade
Lights Out With David Spade really does have its lights out currently — production on the talk show is halted — so the comedian shared some of his material in videos on Instagram. He admitted it is a “tough” situation, but he was making the most of it — coronavirus jokes included.
Jimmy Fallon
The Tonight Show host said he has plans in the works to continue entertaining online. For now, he posted a video of him singing a song about washing your hands — and not touching your face — with cameos from his adorable daughters.
Jennifer Garner, Amy Adams and Reese Witherspoon
And with so many schools closed, Garner and Adams partnered with Save the Children to launch Save With Stories. Celebrities are reading books for kids at home — and asking for small donations to help raise money for kids who rely on free school lunches.
And that was only the start. Miley Cyrus launched a web show Bright Minded: Live With Miley which will feature an interview with Demi Lovato on Tuesday — and many others are sure to get creative too.
