?CBS News Contributor Calls Drake Lawsuit A “Crash Out” On-Air, Says Kendrick “Annihilated” Him
Drake’s lawsuit filed against Universal Music Group has garnered a myriad of opinions. On Thursday (Jan. 16), the 81-page suit was explained on CBS Mornings, where legal contributor Caroline Polisi provided her honest opinion about the move.
“It’s giving crash out, guys,” Polisi said on-air. “But from a legal perspective, it’s an interesting move on Drake’s part. Notably, he’s not suing Kendrick Lamar. He’s suing [Universal Music Group] which reps both of these artists. It seems like a failed attempt to not look petty, not to look like he’s suing the artist that just annihilated him in this rap battle. Let’s just call it for what it is. That song is a banger, right?”
After the co-hosts laughed and told Polisi they’re surprised she was a Hip-Hop fan, she disclosed she did favor one rapper over the other. “I’m a Kendrick stan,” she stated.
The legal expert continued by providing more context about the situation. “Look, legally speaking, the idea is that Universal has been representing Drake for many, many years. They know these allegations are false, they wouldn’t be repping him otherwise. And the fact that they pushed this distribution so much — the song has been streamed on Spotify over a billion times — they’ve really been backing Kendrick Lamar on this one.
Polisi dropped another K. Dot reference by adding, “It’s poetic justice. A lot of people in the community are saying this is not how you deal with a rap battle beef. You go in the studio, you lay down some tracks… I think he’s on pretty shaky legal grounds.” Watch the clip above.
Many social media users gravitated towards the segment, with one of the top Instagram comments reading, “I love how everyone knows Drake is crashing out over losing the battle, even the nice white lady pundit/lawyer.”
An X user reacted, “Told him to get in the booth. Never thought I’d see the day when a white woman is on the news telling a rapper to stop being a loser.”
Drake’s suit against UMG accuses the major label of prioritizing “corporate greed over the safety and wellbeing of its artists” by unfairly bolstering the success of “Not Like Us,” a diss song that accuses Drake of being a pedophile.
UMG issued a response, calling the lawsuit “illogical.”
“Not only are these claims untrue, but the notion that we would seek to harm the reputation of any artist—let alone Drake—is illogical,” detailed a statement from the company. “We have invested massively in his music and our employees around the world have worked tirelessly for many years to help him achieve historic commercial and personal financial success.”
