‘Cats’ Stares Down Summer Dog Days, ‘Motown’ Wilts: Broadway Box Office
Cats notwithstanding, Broadway headed into the summer dog days with a dip in box office, as ticket sales for Week 10 (ending July 31) slipped about 4% from the previous week to $25M. The total gross reflects two fewer productions than the previous week, with total attendance for the 27 shows at 241,220.
The two absent productions were the closed Shuffle Along, and The Humans on a short hiatus before performances start August 8 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. (All numbers provided by the Broadway League trade group).
The Cats revival at the Neil Simon Theatre held steady after good, if not glowing, reviews, taking $755,353, with attendance of 9,371 at 98% of capacity for the seven performances. Hamilton, of course, kept the Richard Rodgers Theatre at standing room, with 10,755 ticket-buyers adding $2M to the till. Others exceeding 95% attendance capacity were Aladdin at the New Amsterdam ($1.7M); Les Miserables at the Imperial ($947,202); Matilda at the Shubert ($997,525); School of Rock at the Winter Garden ($1.2M); The Book of Mormon at the Eugene O’Neill ($1.5M); The Lion King at the Minskoff ($2.6M); Waitress at the Brooks Atkinson ($1M); and Wicked at the Gershwin ($1.9M). Book of Mormon and Lion King each played an extra performance for tourist season.
Two productions played their final weeks, with Fully Committed, the Jesse Tyler Ferguson-starrer at the Lyceum, going out with $468,583, about 60% of its gross potential; and Motown the Musical cutting short a disappointing run at the Nederlander with $587,549, just over half of its weekly potential. An American in Paris, at the Palace, has set an earlier-than-expected closing for Oct. 9 and took in only $662,309 last week, about 45% of its gross potential. On Your Feet, at the Marquis, hit about the same percentage of its potential with $702,076.
Average ticket price on Broadway was about $106. Broadway’s season-to-date total is $271,456,347, with total attendance at 2,631,854.
