'Captain Marvel' will be bringing back some old Marvel Cinematic Universe favorites
Black Panther has been setting box-office records left and right, and Avengers: Infinity War — which will assemble virtually every known hero found in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — is apt to rewrite those just-established benchmarks when it premieres in late April. One do-gooder who won’t be participating in the studio’s gargantuan team-up effort, however, is Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, whose MCU debut is currently scheduled to take place in March 2019. And while details about that solo effort are still somewhat shrouded in secrecy, we know the film has officially begun production — and that it’ll be bringing back some old Marvel favorites as well.
Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half-Nelson, Mississippi Grind), Captain Marvel commenced principal photography on Monday, and to celebrate, Marvel released a photo of Larson in the cockpit of a fighter jet, alongside Brig. Gen. Jeannie Leavitt, from a recent recent trip to Nevada’s Nellis Air Force Base — an apt image given that Larson’s Danvers is a U.S. Air Force pilot who gains superpowers after a run-in with aliens. Moreover, Marvel let slip an official plot synopsis, which confirms rumors that the film will be following the comics’ Kree-Skrull war storyline:
“The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
Furthermore, a cast list confirms that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) will be joining the fray, and that Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), Korath (Djimon Hounsou), and Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) will be along for the ’90s-era ride. Oh, and don’t forget that Jude Law will also be participating as Kree warrior Mar-Vell — and that the always great Ben Mendelsohn is likewise involved, albeit in a still-unspecified role.
Set photos previously showed off Larson in a green-and-gray costume (perhaps Mar-Vell’s outfit?), which suggests that she won’t be donning her traditional red-and-blue outfit until later on in the film. Regardless, we know that Larson has been getting into butt-kicking shape for the part, as evidenced by the following Instagram post:
