New ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ trailer reveals Harrison Ford as Red Hulk, Giancarlo Esposito in action
He’s not Steve Rogers, but Anthony Mackie will take up the shield in a feature film for the first time next year.
On Saturday, during Disney’s first-ever D23 fan convention in Brazil, Marvel debuted the new trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World,” the fourth Captain America entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and “Captain America: Civil War.”

“Brave New World” feels like a cousin to the acclaimed middle-entry in the Rogers trilogy of films, at least judging by the trailer, which blends action and conspiracy in a way reminiscent of “The Winter Soldier.” Harrison Ford, Giancarlo Esposito as the villainous Sidewinder, Danny Ramirez, Tim Blake Nelson, and Shira Haas all co-star.
Here’s the plot, according to Disney: Sam Wilson (Mackie), after meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.”
That’s a cheeky way to tease this one since Red Hulk plays a huge role in the narrative. Ford plays Red Hulk in “Brave New World” and his alter-ego, President Thaddeus Ross. (Ross was originally played in previous Marvel films by the late William Hurt.)
“I make no reference to current history. None. This is a character that’s based on the very, um, a lot of history developed with Bill, who played the character previously,” Ford said at San Diego Comic-Con over the summer, long before “But now I am Thaddeus, and I am elated, and I am proud to become a member of the Marvel universe. I have been watching fantastic actors, some of which are here tonight, have a really good time working in the Marvel universe and I wanted a piece of the action. I’m very proud to be in this film.”
Mackie’s Sam Wilson became Captain America in the 2021 Marvel television series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” But the long-delayed debut of Mackie’s Cap in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will finally arrive onscreen on February 14, 2024.
