Cannes Film Festival Reveals Lineup: Coppola, Cronenberg, Lanthimos, Schrader and Donald Trump Portrait ā€˜The Apprenticeā€™ in Competition

In what looks to be another robust year in the making, the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will bring together several iconic filmmakers, including Francis Ford Coppola with ā€œMegalopolisā€ starring Adam Driver, George Miller with ā€œFuriosaā€ starring Anya Taylor-Joy, as well as George Lucas who will be feted with an honorary Palme dā€™Or. Kevin Costner will also be on hand with the first installment of his Western epic ā€œHorizon, an American Saga.ā€

Some of the high-profile films in the pipeline for this yearā€™s competition include Yorgos Lanthimosā€™ ā€œKinds of Kindness,ā€ a stylized three-part story set in the present that reunites the ā€œPoor Thingsā€ helmer with Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe; Paul Schraderā€™s ā€œOh, Canadaā€ with Richard Gere, based on a novel by the late Russell Banks (ā€œAfflictionā€); Jacques Audiardā€™s musical melodrama ā€œEmilia Perezā€ starring Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez; Paolo Sorrentinoā€™s ā€œParthenopeā€ with Gary Oldman; and David Cronenbergā€™s ā€œThe Shroudsā€ starring Vincent Cassel and Diane Kruger. Thereā€™s also Coralie Fargeatā€™s ā€œThe Substance,ā€ a female-powered horror film starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley from Universal Pictures and Working Title Films.

Beyond the major studio titles, one of the features attracting the most attention on the Croisette could be Ali Abbasiā€™s ā€œThe Apprentice,ā€ which sees Sebastian Stan take on the role of a Donald Trump in a biopic examining his time as real estate businessman in the 1970s and ā€™80s. Outside of competition, Irish director Lorcan Finnegan leaps from Criticsā€™ Week (where he screened ā€œVivariumā€ in 2019) to official selection with the midnight movie ā€œThe Surfer,ā€ featuring Nicolas Cage in the title role.

International movies slated for Cannesā€™ competition include Karim A?nouzā€™s ā€œMotel Destinoā€; Jia Zhang-Keā€™s ā€œCaught by the Tidesā€; Magnus von Hornā€™s ā€œThe Girl With the Needleā€ and Kirill Serebrennikovā€™s ā€œLimonov: The Ballad.ā€

Last year, the festival set a record in terms of female representation, inviting seven female directors to Official Competition. The Palme dā€™Or was ultimately rewarded to Justine Triet for ā€œAnatomy of a Fall,ā€ just the third time a woman has won the festivalā€™s top honor. This year, the number of women in competition stands at just four.

From England, ā€œAmerican Honeyā€ director Andrea Arnold returns to competition with ā€œBird,ā€ a gritty handheld portrait of a suburban girl trying to escape her destiny. Fargeat makes her feature debut with ā€œThe Substance,ā€ a bloody genre movie. Indian director Payal Kapadia will unveil narrative feature ā€œAll We Imagine as Light,ā€ three years after winning the festivalā€™s documentary prize. Hailing from the south of France, Agathe Riedinger brings her debut feature ā€œWild Diamond,ā€ a contemporary coming-of-age story about a young girl who blossoms through a virtual persona on social media.

Hollywood has a slightly lighter presence due to a combination of factors ā€“ including last yearā€™s actors and writers strikes, which created production delays, as well as a tough economy ā€” but this yearā€™s festival will see no shortage of glamour and stars on the red carpet. Nearly half of the films competing shot in English ā€” possibly a record in recent history. These include movies from foreign filmmakers, such as Abbasiā€™s ā€œThe Apprentice,ā€ Fargeat with ā€œThe Substanceā€ and Lanthimos with ā€œKinds of Kindness.ā€ Audiardā€™s ā€œEmilia Perez,ā€ meanwhile, shot in English and Spanish. As previously announced, ā€œBarbieā€ director Greta Gerwig will be presiding over the jury.

The lineup was unveiled by Cannes Film Festival chief Thierry FrƩmaux and president Iris Knobloch on Thursday at the UGC Normandie theater in Paris, where impatient French and international film journalists gathered.

In her opening speech, Knobloch said the festival will now expand beyond the Palais des Festivals and into the Palm Beach, a venue located on the opposite side of the Croisette that is currently being remodeled. Knobloch also said the Cannes Film Market has already lured more than 14,000 accredited professionals from 120 countries.

ā€œThis selection was not particularly easy to make,ā€ FrĆ©maux said. ā€œAs Iris just said it, last year was very successful but we didnā€™t know it would be last year when we were sitting here.ā€

Elsewhere in the lineup, Cannes will feature actors-turned-directors L?titia Dosch and NoĆ©mie Merlant. ā€œPortrait of a Lady on Fireā€ star Merlant brings her sophomore feature ā€œThe Balconettesā€ ā€” a feminist comedy set in Marseilles, co-written by CĆ©line Sciamma ā€” to the midnight section. Dosch, a Cannes discovery who starred in ā€œJeune Femme,ā€ directed the canine courtroom drama ā€œWho Let the Dog Bite?ā€ which will screen in Un Certain Regard alongside Louise Courvoisierā€™s ā€œVingt Dieux!ā€ And in Special Screenings, Yolande Zauberman presents ā€œThe Beauty of Gaza,ā€ a film about trans Palestinians who cross from Gaza to Tel Aviv to live their true identities.

ā€œNo need to tell you that this film was written and filmed before the war and it takes a particular resonance today and continues to explore this painful territory in our planet,ā€ FrĆ©maux said.

Besides Fargeat and Audiard, the other French filmmakers in competition are Gilles Lellouche with ā€œLā€™Amour Ouf,ā€ a music-filled romance starring AdĆØle Exarchopoulos and Fran?ois Civil, and featuring choreography by (La) Horde; Christophe HonorĆ©ā€™s ā€œMarcello Mioā€ starring Catherine Deneuve and Chiara Mastroianni; and Agathe Riedinger who is making her feature debut with ā€œDiamant Brutā€ starring Malou Khezibi, Andrea Bescond and Idir Azougli.

FrĆ©maux suggested more titles will be added to the competition as well. ā€œWe may add, because right now weā€™re not at the usual number of 21 of 22 films in competition,ā€ he said. ā€œItā€™s in the reflections that we will be having in the days to come.ā€ A couple movies were widely expected to turn up in competition ā€” Audrey Diwanā€™s erotic drama ā€œEmmanuelleā€ starring Merlant and Naomi Watts, and Mike Leighā€™s ā€œHard Truths.ā€

In FrĆ©mauxā€™s first and only interview ahead of the presser, the festival boss said Cannes had a 20% rise in accreditation requests. ā€œWeā€™re going to surpass the 2,000 films submitted for the selection. The interest for the festival is clear, and no matter what, itā€™s the films that create the atmosphere each year,ā€ he said.

Last year was a milestone edition for the festival, which world premiered two best picture nominees: Justine Trietā€™s ā€œAnatomy of a Fallā€ and Jonathan Glazerā€™s ā€œThe Zone of Interest.ā€

The Cannes Film Festival will kick off with the world premiere of Quentin Dupieuxā€™s surreal comedy ā€œSecond Actā€ starring Lea Seydoux and Vincent Lindon. The 77th edition runs May 15-25.
