Bruce Campbell Explains Why 'Ash vs. Freddy vs. Jason' Never Got Made
Yes, Bruce Campbell was approached about making an Ash vs. Freddy vs. Jason movie, which would have pitted his famous Evil Dead hero against the slashers from Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th. But the conversation never went very far.
As Campbell explained to in the video above, his suggestion that Ash kill Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees just didn’t go over. “If you can’t kill Freddy and Jason, there’s no reason for Ash to be in it,” said Campbell, who stopped by Yahoo Studios along with his Ash. vs. Evil Dead co-star Lucy Lawless. “The problem with that concept was… lawyers run Hollywood. And the lawyers are gonna say, ‘Oh, you can’t kill Freddy.’ 'Well, if you can’t kill Freddy, then you can’t kill Jason.’ So what are we gonna say? Well if you two bums can’t get killed, then neither can I.’ We had no control over the other characters.”
Of course, one flaw to Campbell’s argument — or the lawyer’s argument — is that Freddy and Jason got killed all the time (especially Jason). Couldn’t they just be resurrected for the next movie like always?
Regardless, the hero-villain crossover does exist in some form. When the New Line Cinema’s treatment for the film version stalled, it was adapted into a six-part comic book series called Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash. Which begs the question: How you gonna bill Ash last?
The new TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead will premiere on Starz on Saturday.
