The Broadway Show You Need to Have an Opinion on This Season
Have you seen the new Cabaret? It's been the question of the moment at dinner parties around New York since the production opened at The August Wilson Theater on April 20.
The production, which originated in London stars Eddie Redmayne as the Emcee and Gayle Rankin as Sally Bowles. Their performances have been the talk of the town and are now Tony nominated. Equally discussed are the costumes and the scenic design—which is completely in the round and brings the Kit Kat Club to life in a way it perhaps has never been before. Those two elements of the show, also Tony-nominated, are the from the mind of Tom Scutt. A group of friends and Town & Country inner inner circle members, including actor Robbie Fairchild, chef Angie Mar, curator Sharon Hurowitz, and author Carole Radziwill, gathered to toast Scutt just days before the Tony Awards and then they sat down to enjoy a performance.
Praise for Scutt’s work was heard throughout the corners of the Kit Kat Club in a completely transformed August Wilson Theater. Betty Buckley, who starred in the famously ill-fated production of Carrie, wondered aloud if "Tom Scutt had designed Carrie we would still be running in here!" And acclaimed Tony winning designer David Rockwell added this about his fellow visionary creative: "It's rare that I see a design that takes a known story and so completely reinvents with such a deep understanding of, and reverence for, the original. Tom’s visual imagery had me looking at Cabaret in a new and exciting way, even as it subtly paid homage to elements of Boris Aronson’s brilliant original designs. The degree of difficulty in creating that kind of playing space in that building is staggering, and Tom's work manages the ultimate trick of being simultaneously understated and extravagant."
In other words, when someone says "Come to the Cabaret," your answer should be "yes."
