Brie Larson Thanks Fans for 'Tidal Wave of Support' After Captain Marvel Casting, Admits She Feared a Backlash

Overwhelmed and relieved by the positive reaction to her casting as Captain Marvel, Brie Larson is urging fans to continue making the internet a safe space for everyone.

In a recent Instagram post, the Oscar-winner captioned photo of herself curled up on the couch, "Woke up this morning thinking about the tidal wave of support I got this weekend. It was nerve-racking to trust fall into the Internet!"

Last weekend at San Diego Comic Con 2016 it was announced that the actress, 26, will star as Captain Marvel in upcoming movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Larson admitted to being nervous about the fan reaction, the news has since been met with near universal praise.

"I know who I am, but its wild how quickly you can forget once someone calls you something terrible," Larson wrote on Instagram. "I was reminded how the acceptance of community is a deeply rooted need – but I don't want to live worried people will hate me because I'm myself! We should all have the freedom to be our authentic selves without fear or judgement."

That the positive experience reminded her that, "Yeah, people can be mean, but they can also be so many other wonderful things too."

She continued, "Let's make this place a safe space. No hate and more understanding."

Captain Marvel isn't slated to hit theaters until 2019, but look for Larson to make a cameo as the super heroine in upcoming Marvel films.
