Bowen Yang Misses The Dress Code Memo As Oscars Brings Back Fab Five Format For Costume Design Presentation
Bowen Yang’s commitment to the bit once again proved fruitful — not only bringing a delightful laugh to Oscars audiences but perhaps tipping the wand in the favor of Wicked‘s Best Costume Design win for Paul Tazewell.
Reupping the “Fab Five” format for the Costume Design presentation, Lily-Rose Depp, Elle Fanning, John Lithgow, Connie Nielsen and Yang appeared onstage to shoutout their respective costume designers for the films Nosferatu, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Gladiator II and Wicked.

And while everyone showed up in their finery for Hollywood’s biggest night, with Depp’s dress reminiscent of the gothic tone of the Robert Eggers’ horror-tinged drama, only Yang adopted the full costume he wears in Wicked as a student at Shiz University. As the curtains rose, and everyone stepped out onstage, the Saturday Night Live star was clearly left out of the dress code discussion.
“Well, that would have been helpful to communicate in the group chat, Fanning,” Yang retorted when The Great alumna said the group had “changed our minds” because it would have been “cringe” to don the film costumes.
“Guess I know who’s winning the Oscar tonight for least supportive best friend,” Yang said.
Tazewell, who is the first Black man to win the category and is 3/4 of his way to an EGOT, was honored by Yang before his historic win: “It’s one of the biggest honors of my alleged career. Paul, I’m actually upset with you, because I can’t talk about your exquisite work without sounding like a total jackass … You legend. If I have to say the words ‘sumptuous fabric’ in an interview again, I’m going to defy gravity off the side of the stage.”
