'Boss Baby' got more Oscar love than 'Wonder Woman' — and Twitter is ticked
And the Oscar goes to … The Boss Baby? That unlikely scenario is actually possible as of Tuesday morning, when the poorly reviewed Dreamworks Animation comedy about an infant businessman (voiced by Alec Baldwin) scored an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. Along with that surprise came a major Oscar snub: Wonder Woman, a critical hit and the highest-grossing superhero film of the year, received zero nominations.
Naturally, award obsessives have been breaking out the reaction GIFs on Twitter.

Though Coco is the favorite to win Best Animated Feature (Pixar already has a record eight wins in this category), insiders never expected The Boss Baby to be nominated. Instead, the favorite for that slot was The Lego Batman Movie, a clever, well-received comedy that somehow didn’t make the cut. (The other nominees are The Breadwinner, Loving Vincent, and Ferdinand.) The loss of Lego’s Caped Crusader to Baldwin’s corporate-speaking newborn hit a few Twitter fans particularly hard — especially since 2014’s The Lego Movie was famously snubbed in the same category.

The Lego Movie, a.k.a. the decade’s greatest cinematic accomplishment, also got overlooked by the Academy, so it makes unfortunate sense that The Lego Batman Movie would as well pic.twitter.com/eo7I8sioHI

MY THERAPIST: How are you feeling?
ME: I just think it’s funny how The Boss Baby got an Oscar nom for best animated feature and The LEGO Batman Movie got snubbed I mean LEGO Batman was the first film in years to truly capture Batman’s identity and internal struggle and—#Oscars— Devan Coggan (@devancoggan) January 23, 2018
As for Wonder Woman, it came into the Oscar competition with high hopes: It was a dark horse contender for both Best Picture and Best Director. At the very least, most prognosticators expected it to get a nod in one of the technical categories, where action and superhero films are often acknowledged. But Wonder Woman got no Oscar love. For many on Twitter, the fact that DC’s far inferior Suicide Squad was nominated for (and won) Best Makeup and Hairstyling last year added insult to injury.

Of course, Wonder Woman is not the first acclaimed film to be overlooked by the Academy, and it probably won’t be the last. As several folks on Twitter pointed out, Patty Jenkins’s movie is in good company — and will likely be remembered long after Boss Baby has gone nighty-night.
