THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT Finally Solves a Lingering Mystery

At last, The Book of Boba Fett is on Disney+. Since the famed bounty hunter resurfaced in season two of The Mandalorian, one of the major things we’ve hoped to learn is how exactly he survived his unfortunate tumble into the Sarlacc Pit. As Boba settles into his new role as Daimyo of Tatooine, with Fennec Shand at his side, we’re learning a little bit more about his journey from sarlacc dinner to crime lord.

While Boba and Fennec are looking ahead, working to solidify their hold on the Tatooine underworld, Boba’s dreams are taking him back. The dreams are quite vivid and, thankfully, plot relevant. As the Mandalorian snoozes in his bacta tank, his dreams take us to the stomach of the sarlacc. Presumably right after his fall in Return of the Jedi. He’s not the only prisoner in the belly of the beast. A similarly-doomed stormtrooper is there as well. Boba siphons some oxygen from the deceased trooper, regaining enough strength to get to work. He punches through the sarlacc and initiates the flamethrower on the armor around his wrist.

Next thing we know, Boba emerges from the sand, exhausted. Presumably setting the sarlacc aflame did the trick. So, he survived the Sarlacc Pit. But that’s just the beginning of his journey. We are on Tatooine, after all. Blink and Jawas are upon you, looking for some loot. Barely survive a trip to the Sarlacc Pit and you’re out of look. While our newly-resurfaced Mandalorian passes out, the Jawas steal his armor. (Which Cobb Vanth will soon come to possess.) He regains consciousness just long enough for the Jawas to knock him out cold again. At which time his luck gets even worse. Tusken Raiders stumble upon him next and take him prisoner.

In yet another series of unfortunate events, Boba makes an unsuccessful run for it at the Tusken camps. Ruined, of course, by his fellow prisoner, a red Rodian. For better or worse, his luck finally turns during a trip to the dunes.

Overseen (poorly) by a Tusken youngling and a feisty massiff, Boba and Rodian search for water pods buried in the sand. It’s very grueling work. Made worse when the Rodian stumbles into a horrible sand monster, who quickly throttles it. RIP to him. The sand monster makes a go at the youngling but Boba intervenes.

Sure, Boba had to strangle and behead a sand monster on behalf of a foolish Tusken youngling. But as the kid parades the severed head around the camp, the Tusken leader hands Boba a much-needed pod of water. He’s far from the (mostly) recovered fighter we encountered in The Mandalorian but he’s finally one step closer to meeting Fennec Shand.

There you have it: The Book of Boba Fett‘s premiere answered the key question of how Boba survived the Sarlacc Pit and then some. Hopefully, over the course of the season, Boba’s dreams will reveal the bounty hunter’s full journey.
