Rene Russo Reveals She's Bipolar
While promoting her new film Nightcrawler on The Queen Latifah Show, Rene Russo shared that she suffers from bipolar disorder and takes medication to help keep it in check.
The revelation came about after Queen Latifah asked Russo and her Nightcrawler co-star, Jake Gyllenhaal, about a problem that they had to push through in their own lives.
The 60-year-old actress responded, "Bipolar medication," to which Gyllenhaal said, "She's got me beat!"
Though she hadn't expected to speak out about her disorder, which is characterized by dramatic shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels, Russo continued: "I realized that my mom said my whole childhood that 'you’re stop and go.' And then I stopped and was like, 'Whoa.' That was it for me."
She then spoke about the moment when she realized she needed to start taking medication for her disorder. "I literally crashed and hit a wall and couldn’t get out bed," Russo said. "I thought it was a depression, but if you take antidepressants it speeds you up more. So I’m kind of stop and go. I either crash or speed."
Russo added, "I haven't shared this, but I think it's kind of important. I have some friends who don't want to go on medication, and they are suffering," she said, encouraging others to seek help if they need it.
Russo isn't the only Hollywood star to suffer from the disorder. Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has also been vocal about her struggles with bipolar disorder over the years. Roughly 2.6 percent of Americans have a form of bipolar disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
