Billie Eilish sits down for Vanity Fair time capsule for eighth year
Billie is back.
For the eighth year in a row, Billie Eilish sat down with Vanity Fair for a taped interview. In a time-lapse experiment, the magazine reunites with the pop star annually on Oct. 18 to talk all things career, style and sex.
From blue to green to red and then back to black hair, the "Birds of a Feather" singer can be seen in side-by-side frames at the video's opening, comparing her number of followers on social media as it grows exponentially.
In this year's conversation, the singer reflected on winning an Oscar for "What Was I Made For?" off the "Barbie" movie soundtrack, adding new people to her life and trusting herself.
Eilish reflects on relationships, sex, dimming her light
"It's just been a year filled with friendship," she told the outlet, revealing she had deepened existing relationships, added new ones and reconnected with former lost connections.
"Yes, I've had a lot of good sex," she also joked in response to a wish expressed in her video the year before, "so you're welcome Billie."
The Eilish of the past also expressed hope that she wouldn't let anyone dim her sparkle.
"It's always scary when you fall in love or you're seeing someone or you like someone," she told the magazine, "because you're blinded by this curtain of lust and love and admiration."
"I really trust myself," the artist said. "And I'm not going to let any of that stuff happen again."
A blockbuster year
"It was such a drag it was so punishing," she said of creating her newest album, "Hit Me Hard and Soft." The project has been a massive success, garnering Eilish seven Grammy nominations. It came in at No. 6 on Spotify's top 10 most-listened-to albums in the U.S. over the past year, with one of its star tracks making the list for most listened-to songs as well.

"I feel like it's the best thing Finneas and I have ever made," she told Vanity Fair. Finneas, a musician in his own right, is both Eilish's brother and producer.
A video from the year before sees her predicting "Lunch" and "Birds of a Feather" as the biggest hits off the then-not-yet-released album. She ended up being right. "Birds of a Feather" took off, racking up billions of streams and becoming the project's runaway hit.
Eilish was also named Apple Music's Artist of the Year for 2024 ? she nabbed the title once before in 2019.
Billie Eilish backtracks collaboration criticism: 'I mean, it's Charli though'
Eilish also chuckled at back-to-back shots of her complaining about the difficulty of collaborating with other artists.
"I mean, it's Charli though!" she countered when the magazine pulled up a picture of her most recent guest spot on Charli XCX's song "Guess." The track, off the extended version of Charli's instantly viral "Brat" album, got the Eilish treatment in August.
The collaboration process was a "dream" though, the singer told Vanity Fair, saying it came about when Finneas attended a Charli XCX concert. The sibling pair worked up lyrics, and then Eilish joined the British singer for a video shoot and the project was out days later.
"Charli and I did this collab in the greatest way possible, like my ideal," she said.
Some things are different, some the same
The format of the interview remained fairly untouched, with the singer sharing her favorite movie ("Fruitvale Station") and what artist she's currently listening to (Lady Gaga).
It concludes with a shot of her mom, who enters the frame for a hug and reflects on how much has changed since the first interview.
In 2017, when Vanity Fair first began taping the artist, neither party could have known how famous she would become. The project provides insight into one of music's more enigmatic teen stars as she moves into adulthood and learns to love herself (and her music) in the process.
"See you next time, and the time after that and the time after that, 'til I'm an old lady," Eilish joked.
