As expected, films like “Emilia Pérez,” “Wicked,” “The Brutalist,” and “Conclave” are all leaders of the pack, but even though they have long been in the mix, the extra love for titles from “The Substance” to “I’m Still Here” are surprises that break away from how The Academy has traditionally voted for categories like Best Picture.
Notably, many of the specific nominees for those Best Picture contenders did not have the producers’ names next to them on the announcement since, in order to qualify as a producer nominee for a nominated picture in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature Film, and Best Picture categories, the producer must have been determined eligible for a Producers Guild of America award for the picture or have successfully appealed the Producers Guild of America’s refusal of such eligibility. In other words, there will be more names of Oscar nominees to come by early February.
But as fascinating as the surprises were, there were still plenty of snubs that proved hard for cinephiles. After all, as great as it is that there were so many films, actors, and artisans in the mix, the hard truth is, only so many names can make the cut.
Read on for our full list of snubs and surprises from the 2025 Oscar nominations.
