The Best Spring TV Premieres Give You Something New to Binge
Spring television premieres are finally in full swing. Yes, that means all-new series like Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s latest Run and Normal People’s TV adaptation, along with new seasons of your staple watches like Insecure and Billions. These additions are just the refill you need before you start scraping from the bottom of your Netflix library. There are a few that have already gotten their starts that you might have missed, so get to catching up. By the time you've gotten a schedule down, more will be coming down the pike. The drought is finally over. Erase your chalk tallies of Breaking Bad rewatches from your living room wall. If you’re going to get sore from sitting on the couch all day, you might as well bring some gain to that pain. Let these new episodes bring a sense of discovery to your bingeing.
Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker
The Netflix miniseries about Madam C. J. Walker may be a bit fictionalized (with some slight inaccuracies, thanks to creative liberty), but it cannot alter the fact that Walker was America's first documented self-made millionaire. Played to critical acclaim by Octavia Spencer, the story about the entrepreneur whose hair care products changed the course of the industry and the Black businesswomen who would follow her.
Three Busy Debras
If a break from reality is what you’re craving, few new shows will slave over a hot stove all day to serve you up the absurdist, deranged comedy that is Three Busy Debras. Based on the sketch brainchild of its stars Mitra Jouhari, Sandy Honig, and Alyssa Stonoha, the series follows three off-kilter housewives living in the affluent fictional suburb of Lemoncurd. Not to mention, the weekly episodes come in 15-minute bites and are free to stream.
Status: Available on Adult Swim
The Last O.G.
Co-created by Jordan Peele and starring Hollywood heavy-hitters Tracy Morgan and Tiffany Haddish, The Last O.G. has been one of the most refreshing sitcoms on television since its premiere in 2018. In its third season, Tray is back to navigate a whole new realm of the city that has drastically changed since his youth: the hipster gentrification of Brooklyn.
Status: Available on Netflix
Run
If you’re not ready to once again be held captive by another Phoebe Waller-Bridge series … run. Created and written by Waller-Bridge’s longtime collaborator Vicky Jones, this dark comedy thriller follows a pair of college sweethearts as they fulfill their 17-years-old pact to run away together.
Status: Premiered April 12 on HBO
Killing Eve
While many series are being forced to postpone premieres this spring, Killing Eve has met its fandom’s needs by pushing up its season premiere by two weeks. The third season will pick up on its two leads Eve and Villanelle, played by Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, with Eve in hiding and Villanelle convinced that Eve is dead. However, as the first two seasons have gone to show, these two women can never remain separated for long.
Status: Premiered April 12 on BBC America
Insecure
It’s not every day that a major network is willing to alter its typical release schedule to accommodate one person’s schedule. But when that one person is the endlessly talented and perpetually busy Issa Rae, it’s worth the wait. The acclaimed series, based on Rae’s web series Awkward Black Girl, now returns for a fourth season as it meets back up with its characters, who are navigating new life transitions with heart and hilarity.
Status: Premiered April 12 on HBO
Normal People
This limited series actually did justice to the Sally Rooney novel it was based on. Set in Ireland, it follows the relationship between Marianne and Connell from their high school beginnings into adulthood, full of complicated twists and turns. Even if you haven’t read the book, this show will definitely draw you into its deep and enthralling emotional rollercoaster, with outstanding performances by the two leads.
Billions
Finally, some corruption and misuse of power that's fictional. Billions is set to return for a fifth season with a renewed rivalry between Bobby Axelrod and Chuck Roades. The season looks ready to amp up its energy with new characters, including performances by Julianna Margulies and Corey Stoll.
Status: Coming May 3 on Showtime
The Eddy
If a television series could win Best Picture, it would appear that The Eddy is seeded fairly comfortably in the running. Directed by La La Land and Whiplash’s Damien Chazelle and starring the likes of André Holland, Joanna Kulig, and Amandla Sternberg, the musical drama miniseries is brimming with Oscar regulars. The series transports viewers to Paris, where a former New-York-based pianist navigates his new life as a jazz club owner.
Status: Coming May 8 on Netflix
Snowpiercer
Even as a passive audience member, agreeing to climb aboard a train that is perpetually circling the globe is … daunting. However, add to the circumstances that the series is set in the midst of an apocalyptic ice age, Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs are on-board, and the story is based off a Bong Joon-Ho movie, and hopping on is a no-brainer.
Status: Coming May 17 on TNT
Pause that Breaking Bad rewatch. Time to check out 'Snowpiercer' or 'The Eddy' instead.
